Over-65s spend on average £10,400 on home improvements for retirement

Installing a downstairs bathroom, adding handrails and even having chair lifts put in are common changes being made to many homes in preparation for later life.

Making these changes however is not cheap. One in eight homeowners have plans to spend as much as £20,000 to ensure they can continue to live in their house as they grow older.

Many are turning to equity release schemes to raise the cash for these home improvements.
